Weapons like these continued to morph and be formed into weapons so large they could knock out entire cities, and even one which made the history books as the first "lady's" companion. The Derringer, yes, the same gun which killed one of our most famous presidents, Abraham Lincoln, was originally made to appeal to the female. Of course there was no stopping production there. Not when it came to guns and not when it came to weaponry in general.
Today we have atomic bombs with nuclear warfare being in the back of every politician's mind. We have guns which can kill from up to eight football fields away, and our earliest weapon? It's available in every sports store as a baseball bat. And, another little known fact, that original weapon, the stick or baseball bat, is the #1 weapon used in murders in the great US of A today. Guns are actually down to around #8 on the list.
Now, what does that have to do with writing Science Fiction? Well, obviously the weapons which have evolved with us this last several thousand years would most likely do the same anywhere else in The Universe. Would it not? So, what weapons can we possibly create, and in creating them, which ones would truly win out? Would the biggest, baddest weapon come out on top, or would the stick win out again?
In my Kataran Series, I think it's a great mix of both. You see, the Katara were birthed from The Universe, and The Lightning is in their veins. Any technology utilizing electricity or any other similar type of laser only adds to their power when fired upon, and simply malfunctions in their hands as its power is drained. So, these magnificent peace keepers, the spec ops guys of the Rignor Galaxy, fall back on a stick. A quarterstaff to be more specific, however they also hand-make every one of their own weapons individually; including knives, Archniels, and any other number of neat hand to hand combat type of weaponry.
Obviously it does not make them invincible, and most would argue it would open them up to many different kinds of injuries and vulnerabilities. I invite you to take a peek and see which weapons make it out on top. Will it be the newest advances made in weaponry, or will we always go back to the big stick...?
