As parents and grandparents, our jobs are so much larger than we sometimes like to think. Being an honest sounding board, not a judgmental finger-pointer, can make the difference between a child who seeks your guidance and approval verses a child who doesn't want anything to do with you. Now, I'm not in any way advocating being a "friend" to your kids or grandkids over being their parent or guardian. I am simply saying that we should strive to talk to them as people, not babies. The end result will be long-lasting relationships that will stand the test of time and outside influences.
And watching these young people grow up to be productive, wonderful, and influential adults in our communities and country will be its own reward. For even Former President Lincoln knew the power that mother's had over our country. I will beg you to never believe you are less than you are, or that your influence is less than it is. So, keep writing your own life story on the hearts of those you cherish most. Then stand back, and watch it bloom into another story that will be written on the hearts of others.
